How the major stock indexes fared on Friday

Stocks finished sharply higher on Wall Street Friday, breaking a four-day losing streak, after the government reported a big pickup in hiring by U.S. employers in July.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 217.29 points, or 1.7 percent, to close at 13,096.17.

The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 25.99, or 1.9 percent, to 1,390.99.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 58.13, or 2 percent, to 2,967.90.

For the week:

The Dow is up 20.51 points, or 0.2 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 5.02, or 0.4 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is up 9.81, or 0.3 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 878.61 points, or 7.2 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 133.39, or 10.6 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is up 362.75, or 13.9 percent.
