MORELIA, Mexico (AP) — State prosecutors in western Mexico say four people were shot to death and 10 wounded after gunmen burst into a wedding reception and opened fire. An angry mob later tried to lynch the town police chief in revenge.

Prosecutors spokesman Carlos Arrieta says guests were just cutting the cake when at least two men entered with handguns Monday night and began shooting in the town of Salvador Escalante in Michoacan state.

One person died at the party and another died en route to the hospital. Gunmen stopped another ambulance and executed two more people. They later shot up the police station.

Townspeople then appeared outside the police chief's home seeking revenge, but federal police and soldiers intervened.

The chief, two sons and a police commander are being held for questioning.
