CHICAGO (AP) — An appeals court is considering what could be imprisoned former Illinois Gov. George Ryan's last longshot chance at a new trial.

Ryan attorneys argued Friday before the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals after an order from the nation's high court. The former Republican governor is nearing the end of a 6 1/2-year federal prison sentence on several corruption charges.

Attorneys say there's no evidence Ryan took bribes. They say the court should overturn those convictions based on a 2010 Supreme Court ruling curtailing "honest services" laws.

Federal prosecutors disagreed.

Last year, the appeals court rejected arguments that the convictions should be tossed. In April, the high court upheld Ryan's convictions but took issues with the lower court's reasoning.

It's unknown how long the three-judge panel will take to decide.
