SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rico is slated to receive more than $2 million in federal funds to help those on a waiting list for HIV/AIDS medication.

Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi said Tuesday that the money will target patients lacking health insurance. The announcement comes after the U.S. territory recently received $17 million to boost prevention and treatment programs in metropolitan areas.

More than 44,000 people on the island of nearly 4 million inhabitants have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.

It's unclear exactly how many patients are waiting for their medication.
