Today's News Briefs and Commentaries

We already know Barack Obama sure doesn't like the likes of talk radio titans like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. Yet, he's always been careful to say he opposes the Fairness Doctrine. He'd rather go about it in a different way.

And, get his old homestate senator, Dick Durbin, to do his bidding

The Senate overwhelmingly approved a measure to prevent the Fairness Doctrine from being reinstated today, yet also agreed to urge the Federal Communications Commission to increase "diversity" on the airwaves.

President Obama wrote a letter to the FCC when he was Illinois senator saying action must be taken to increase minority ownership in print and broadcast media. Conservative watchdogs have argued using government to do this is a  "backdoor" version of the Fairness Doctrine.

Both actions were attached to a larger bill to grant Washington D.C. voting rights. At this point it is unclear if either measure would be included in the final version of the bill.

Conservative Sen. Jim DeMint (S.C.) sponsored the amendment to kill the Fairness Doctrine. It passed 87-11.

Liberal Sen. Dick Durbin (D.-Ill.) sponsored the competing amendment for more media diversity, which passed 57-41.

"Today was an important victory for free speech, but the fight is far from over," said DeMint in a statement. "Senator Durbin's amendment exposed Democrat intentions to impose radio censorship through the back door using vague regulations dealing with media ownership. Senator Durbin's language was so broad, it could apply beyond radio to television, newspapers and the internet. All eyes are now on the FCC. If they attempt to shut down free speech directly, we will fight to stop them."

CPAC is hosting a panel to discuss the Fairness Doctrine at 3:45pm with Joe Scarborough and Tucker Carlson. I do hope they weigh in on the Senate's latest action.

OK then
Since television also come to us via airwaves, does that mean the ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN, etc will also have to provide more diversity as well?

Whatever will Gibson, Couric, Matthews, Olbreman, and Williams do?

not good news
since airwaves is only radio, they will suppress Conservative Talk Radio. they are obviously doing this in response to Rush.

scary
Well just watch how they hide more and more of their agenda in these bills. If one watches TV it is pretty difficult to find any news that is not biased. At least on the radio I have been able to hear about some of the things that are really happening with the new administration. It is pretty sad that our government is so afraid of guys like Limbaugh and Hannity. This is just the beginning of us only hearing what they want us to hear. Gee isn't that how communism works.

Funny
The Obama administration announces it will not seek to re-instate the Fairness Doctrine.

The Democratic-controlled Senate votes 87-11 against re-instating the Fairness Doctrine.

How does the right wing react?

Fear of fairness
President Obama has much more on his plate than swatting at gnats like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. Face it, he won in spite of the bluster from Republican talk shows and FoxNews, so it's unlikely he cares much about Limbaugh's fear of legitimate competition. It is quite nice to think that while "the government" aided Rush Limbaugh's saturation of the radio market back in the days of Ronald Reagan, now we might rely on our government to bring back a semblance of fairness to the radio dial and radio station ownership.

Let them have it
I don't care if the AM radio waves are dominated by gasbags like Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage. Some seem to think that this demonstrates their superiority in the "marketplace of ideas." I happen to think that right-wingers enjoy listening to arrogant old men rant and rave about, well, whatever. Liberals don't. Ergo, liberals don't listen to talk radio. You guys can have it.
paddy o'furniture writes: Thursday, February, 26, 2009 4:44 PM
It has nothing to do with "fairness..."
The various media are all in business to make money. There is obviously a strong market for conservative talk radio. The libs.....well, they're stil trying to figure out what all those little button thingies are for.....

Thus, conservative radio prospers.....lefty radio flounders....and then runs for the Senate.

With this administration's obvious disregard for Capitalism, the regulation of the airwaves is not all that far-fetched. This type of tyrannical government will attempt to regualate anything that comes to mind.....

AM Talk Radio
Conservative talk radio on AM was essentially the result of rock & roll and other music migrating to the FM bands for better sound. That left the AM broadcasting industry, with all those expensive studios, transmitters, and antennae, with nothing to broadcast. The void was filled by conservative talkers. You don't need stereo when it's just one guy sitting at a mic, and fortuitously pick-up trucks tend to have AM radios.

No, libs only have one: it's for NPR. I'm a highly educated lib, I have two: one for NPR and one for Democracy Now.

"And would you say the same about Al Franken? I'm betting not."

This is fear mongering that frankly is beneath you. A lot of "minorities" I know would call themselves conservative - and that population is growing as they listen to what's happening in DC and don't like what they hear. The more the Messiah and Congress usurp power from the common working class people out there, the backlash will not be prejudicial in its ethnic diversity (to use as much liberal terminolgy in one sentence that I could think of). Obama and the San Fran Nan's of the country are overplaying their hand with this naked attempt to socialize every aspect of society. So-called minority radio owners will recognize this as well as so-called majority owners.

Freedom does not know nor care of race.

"No, libs only have one: it's for NPR."

What are you, an old guy? I get NPR as podcasts, downloaded to my iPod or a flash drive and plugged into the dock or USB port on my car radio. I'm looking into hacking into the radio's CPU so I can get it to use its Bluetooth transceiver to download the podcasts directly when it's parked in the garage.

(Does anyone know if there's a car stereo that runs on Linux?)
TrickleupPolitics writes: Friday, February, 27, 2009 9:25 AM
How will this work?
The FCC needs to ensure that more minorities own media? So, instead of allowing someone with money and a plan to buy a station, now the FCC will put them through the skin color test? This is outrageous, but to a nation that is used to decades of affirmative action, I guess we've lost the ability to get enraged. I was taking the bar exam the other day, talking to a young black woman. We were reviewing and brought up equal protection. I said that affirmative action favors some groups over other groups, thus violating equal protection. The look on her face was interesting. She was embarrassed. She knew, even though she said otherwise. When are we going to put a stop to this charade?
TrickleupPolitics writes: Friday, February, 27, 2009 9:26 AM
The skin color test
Another thought. Isn't it interesting that Obama thinks that more minorities should own media outlets? He apparently thinks that minorities are automatically liberal. He is judging an entire class of people by their skin color. Isn't that the definition of racism?

Alan Keyes Calls Obama a Communist!
In a snippet from Bill O'reilly show last night Keyes said Obama is a Communist because the way he is sinking America into debt.

AND...
a RETIRED MAJOR GENERAL says Obama's eligibility needs proof On the heels of two active duty members of the U.S. military serving in Iraq calling for President Obama to prove his eligibility to be president, a retired major general has agreed to join the case, saying he just wants "the truth."

Read the latest now on WND.com:
http://wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=90125

Just when you libs thought this might go away, more and more people are jumping on the bandwagon to see that the truth is revealed. Obama could have settled the whole matter long ago by just providing his original birth certificate for the country to see instead of dodging "the truth" and causing this problem for himself. I've always said if you don't have anything to hide...don't hide it, as he has done with his birth certificate. Think about it; there has to be a reason he won't produce it. Could it possibly be that it's because it says 'country of Kenya' insteaad of State of Hawaii?? We'll see.

Talk Radio
Libs don`t like conservative talk radio because they hate having their bubbles burst with honest debate that stands up in the light of inspection. Lib talk radio fails because advertizers pull their money when they realize there`s no substance there. Like NPR, PBS and the like, without public funding, they die. To that I say, "Thank GOD you`re gone , Air Head America!!!"

You have to wonder where liberals
Are coming from wrt The Fairness Doctrine. Do they:

1. Know that TFD is in direct contravention to the U.S. Constitution, but that the ends justify the means (since conservative talk is evil)?

OR

2.Don't know that TFD is in direction contravention to the U.S. Constitution and are trying to even a presumably uneven playing field?

OR

3.Don't believe that TFD can be construed as in direct contravention to the U.S. Constitution and therefore talk radio is fair game?

Be nice if some the liberal posters on TH would weigh in on this.

You forgot the last points:

4. Know that TFD is a wingnut boogie-man, used to scare the simpler minds on the right and drum up outrage and contributions?

5. Realize that no one of any consequence on the left has any real interest in TFD?

6. Know that TFD is really just a smoke-screen for the coming campaign to take away all your guns (TWWYG)? Boogie-boogie!

WHEN was the last time YOU were in a truck? If ever. I have YET to see a truck for sale (new) on a showroom floor without at least an AM/FM CD radio and most play MP-3s. By the way, Rush is carried on at least 30 FM talk stations, about 5% of his market.

At least Rush didn't have to ROB a Boy's Club to fund his show like Al Frankenstein did with Airhead America. At least he HAS sponsors willing for fork over tons of cash unlike National Propaganda Radio which bleeds TAXPAYERS for cash.

There will be no dissent
from the government's CORRECT view of things and the government will do what is necessary to enforce that view. They will harass those who disagree with them and try to shut them down completely. There is already talk about "fairness" on the internet which SHOULD scare the liberals and especially the Greens.

When the powers that be decide some dearly loved program of the Left or the Greens is just too expensive, gets in the way of some favored government program they will block you too. They can just say the problem is solved and you will have no way of challenging them.

We can claim "diversity" all we want-when news and opinion has to be approved by a governmental or semi-governmental board ALL you will get is government approved opinion. And the Liberals may well be shooting themselves in the foot here: What if our next President is a Richard Nixon?

That type now knows what news can do-they would never let the media report on Watergate again. If they make the rules they can decide what is and what is news v. opinion. Slippery slope we are on.

How many major Internet sites can you name that are conservative? Only one comes to mind and that is Townhall.com. Now how many major liberal Internet sites can you name? DailyKos, Huffington-Post, MoveOn.org, etc. If that law is passed, then they would have to shut down at least two liberal Internet sites.)

We already have more diversity in this country than any other country on the planet and people get along. If liberals want diversity on the radio, all they have to do is start a liberal talk radio program. It's been done and the programs keep failing for lack of listeners. Nothing is preventing liberals from starting talk radio programs (except for a lack of listeners to support the program. So I guess you are recommending that enough people be forced to listen to liberal talk radio or that taxpayers pick up the tab for radio programs that can not generate enough cash to cover expenses. Ah, but what about choice and tolerance? I hear those words repeatedly from liberals and how much they are in favor of those two ideals. But their words are lies (as your post and other liberals' make quite clear).
If you are so distressed about the state of this country and want to see Communism up close, move to Cuba or Russia. I have offered this option to many liberals and not one has taken me up on the offer - thus further exposing liberals as the hypocrites that they are.
